I have a computer that i bought with windows xp loaded on it and it has the
sticker on the side that has the product key, The problem i have is the
harddrive is in such bad shape it needs to be reformatted and windows needs
to be reinstalled, How do i reinstall when i dont have the disk but i have
the key and it is a legal copy on the system. Please help because since i
have a legal key i dont think i should have to buy the cd, and its home
edition, and yes i have tried everything to fix it, its shot.

If the sticker with the CD-key is attached to the PC (signifies this is an
OEM version of windows), then you need to contact the manufacturer of that
PC for a replacement, they may/may not charge a fee for replacement (whether
you think you should be charged or not is immaterial), but since this is an
OEM, and their CD-key may only work with their version of XP (may/may not be
BIOS and/or hardware locked). Your other alternative would be to run down
to Best Buy, Wal-Mart or Circuit City and such, and purchase an XP Home or
Pro full retail, 199/299 USD respectively.

Small Note: If you want to learn how to fix/do something, I'll point you to
it, but if you want me to do your work for you, it will cost you $50 USD per
hour - your choice.

The manufacturer must provide a way to restore the computer.
Some, HP, Compaq and others use a hidden partition on the hard drive.
Check your manual and/or contact the manufacturer for details.

Legally, the OEM has met it's contractual obligation to Microsoft
by providing a means of returning the PC to its ex-factory state,
whether it's a Recovery CD or a Recovery Partition. They are not
legally obliged to provide a true installation CD as part of the sale.
Reputable, customer-service aware OEMs, like Dell and Gateway, do
provide a full OEM installation CD, that does permit custom
installations and repairs. Many uncaring OEMs, such as Compaq, HP,
and Sony, however, in an effort to save pennies and reduce their
support costs by having to hire support people that can only say "Boot
from the Recovery CD to return your PC to its original condition,"
provide only a CD bearing a disk image of the hard drive as it left
the factory. These Recovery/Restore CDs cannot perform normal
installations, nor can they be used to do any sort of customizations.

Essentially, it boils down to "You get what you pay for."

Contact the computer's manufacturer (or read the computer's
manual) to determine the specific recovery mechanism provided for your
computer, and how to use it.

Your vendor must have (or should have) given you a CD to restore your system. If they are genuinely Microsoft approved vendors (M$ partners to sleep with uncle Bill) then they are required to supply something to enable customers restore their system to factory standard. Failure that, I suggest search google for OEM software and you will get millions prepared to sell you M$ software for a fraction of the price. I can see you can buy both OS professional and Office 2003 professional for $50.

If you are in the UK then I can supply you with the media for £10 and you can use this in association with your CD-key to reinstall/format your hard disk. I can also supply you one with CD-key (VLK) which requires no activation for £20. For security reasons, I expect people to supply me their email address (free hotmail or yahoo would do) so that I can contact then privately. The choice is yours.

Hope this proves useful.

I use non Microsoft products wherever possible which requires no activation.
