Hi, Could someone tell me if when you buy a new PC they should give you the
Windows installation disk with licence?, as a friend of mine didn't get one
when he bought he's PC.

Thanks

Sam

Most big Mfgrs use a partician with recovery information stored on it (eg.
HP, Compaq), which eliminates the CD's we have cherished in the past. Open
"My computer", and you will usually see a "D" with the stored information.

this isn't a chat room - wait for the replies and please crosspost instead
of multi-posting. I replied to your other post.

Yes, you should insist on a disk. You won't get one necessarily, but you
should insist on in anyway. I would not purchase a new computer that did
not come with a Windows XP installation disk, or as a least desirable
alternative, a recovery and restore disk. You will find that most of the
major "brand name" systems will come with a restore disk. An actual Windows
XP disk is usually only supplied with systems from custom pc makers.

Kevin...Possibly eMachines is one of the few that *may* still come with
restore CD's...but, the makers of HP and Compaq, do not supply restore CD's
when purchased from such places as Best Buy, ABC Wharehouse, or Circuit
City, and possibly other places like WalMart...All information is stored on
a partician. I do, however, agree with you in saying, I would not purchase
such computers personally. I do believe Gateway is one also that still has
Recovery CD's. Just wanted to share that with you.

Sam;
Check the invoice to see if a CD was included.

All that is required is for the computer manufacturer to provide a way
to restore the computer to as new configuration.
Some use a hidden partition on the hard drive.
Some give the option of creating the restore CDs one time.
There may be other ways all acceptable.
Check the manual and/or contact the manufacturer for details.

Thanks from me, Jupiter...I was unaware that Recovery CDs could be made from
the partitians. My friend has an HP, and I will look into this for him on
his computer. Have a great day.

Willie;
They can be made if the manufacturer sets it up that way.
I think HP has set it up that way.

If that's the case, that partition should be copied to CDs or DVD as
soon as possible.

My HP gave me the option to create CD's. It's located under PC Help
and Tools.

Excellent! You never know what HP will do, my laptop came with a set
of restore CDs (no hidden restore partition) that will return the
harddrive to the exact setup it originally was so I can format the
harddrive, install any OS, software, etc. and then run the restore CDs
and it will wipe everything and put it back like the day it left the
factory. VERY nice if I wanted to sell the laptop BUT...

It ALSO came with a copy of Windows XP Home so I can format, partition
and install, the restore CDs won't partition, I have to use the entire
disk.

FWIW, that may not be standard with HP Laptops, my model number ends in
"WM" and you know what that means, right?

(For those who don't, it means it was custom made for Walmart, they
specified everything.)

Thanks for the info. I haven't seen any laptops at any of the 3 WalMarts in
my immediate area...just desktops.

They carry a couple in the store near me and Sam's Club has some as
well. I got mine on eBay after Walmart discontinued them, an eBay
store bought all the stock and the price was very attractive.
