Hi,

About a year ago I built a PC for a friend AMD 256mb ram, 40gb hard disk,
sound blaster live, cdrw/dvd. For the past year its been working without
problem, then 2 weeks ago, my friend ask me to take a look at it because it
wasn't booting, I had a look and it gave this error.

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupted: WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I downloaded maxtors disk diags, and ran it, to check the hard disk, in case
there was something corrupt. It didn't find any errors. As he didn't have
much on there, I decided to format and re-install. This went with out
problems, on went XP, SP1, Office 2k, and Nero 6, gave it back to him, and
it worked fine for a week, then last Wednesday he told me it had the same
error, nothing else has been installed, all the hardware checks out fine,
what could it be? Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

Ben

did he accidentally remove the Windows System 32

Wouldn't have thought so, he's not one of these annoying users who mess with
their systems, only uses it for email & word! He said that he managed to
boot it once and it went into windows ok, but the next time it got the same
error.

I've heard the registry can cause this if its to big, but how do you stop it
happening? It only has Windows XP, SP1, Office 2K, and Nero 6, he doesn't
mess with the registry and there are no dodgy hardware drivers or software
installed!

Above was meant to say "AMD XP2000+, 256mb ram...."

i'm actually having the same problem, i think it was caused by using the "bulletproofsoft" spyware scan, it removed some files from my system32 and i havn't been able to boot, i have my hard drive in another computer, as the slave drive and am currently trying to find a way to reinstall windows xphe without having to format. i have alot on my 120gig hd that i don't want to lose..;x

have you tried just having xp repair itself? start the install but instead
of formating the drive there should be either a selection to select the
drive or a selection to repair an exsisting install. you might have to tell
it to install first. it has been a while since i done anythign with that.
