Windows XP boot hangs at the black screen

I used partition magic to merge two partitions into one and my system now hangs during boot at the black startup screen. The mereged disk appears to be completely intact. I can see all files and folders. I cannot boot in safe mode. I tried to use my (OEM) WIndows XP disk to perfom a system repair, but it didn't work. Is there a way that I can repair this?
