Hello:
Here is what is going on:
1. I have a Compaq 2590US laptop. For unknown reasons, the registry
is damaged and will not let me bring up WinXP home edition. It
doesn't allow me to go to any type of safe mode. The last known good
configuration also does not get me anywhere.
2. I had never backed up the registry but still logged in via recovery
console and used the backup version of the registry in the repair
section knowing well that I might lose information regarding all the
new software I had loaded. When I did that, it still won't boot and
gave the error that lsass.exe was missing. I went back to the
original registry which it was unable to load essentially the problem
returned.
3. To do a completely new install, I noticed an alarming message that
it might delete MyDocuments folder which I don't want to happen. I
thought that I should be able to go back to repair console and get the
files I want out and then do a new install. This time however, I
cannot log back in though there was no administrator password.
4. I decided to create a boot disk based on instructions available on
the internet but most of those are for floppy based systems and this
new laptop doesn't have a floppy drive. I burnt a CD instead and
though during startup, it goes to the CD, it doesn't do anything and
returns to the screen where I can pick up different boot options (safe
mode, safe mode w/networking etc.!).
So the questions are:
1. Any solution to my problem of repairing the registry?
2. If not, does anyone know an alternative to floppy based bootdisk so
that I can atleast getting into the hard drive to get my files off of
it prior to a clean install?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Raj
