Hi
I recently needed to replace one of the file in
windows\system32\telnet.exe with one from win2k.

when I renamed the original telnet to telnetXP it appeared to work.
But this was a trick. In fact as soon as I renamed the file windows
recreated the original it just didn't show up until I refreshed the
view.

To prove this rename yours and then try to rename it back.
You will get the error message that the file already exists.

I tried this with other files as well.

When did windows start protecting those files
and are there other directories where this phenomenon exists?

Windows XP has always used system file protection.

To replace that file you will need to rename the copy of telnet.exe in the
\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache folder before renaming the copy in the
\WINDOWS\system32 folder.
