windows Xp and office 97

I have transferred all of my documents from my pc with win 98 on it, to my new computer with win xp. i deletd the new office trial software and installed my office 97.. now everything is recognized as a wordpad document and i am getting a "not valid win 32 applicaton whenever i try to open a document in word 97.....i can write in office 97 but it saves as a wordpad file? any idea what is going on??

and download all the available Office 97 updates, beginning with
SR-1, then SR-2.

i did that and it worked great.
any idea what to do for the same situation with excel and powerpoint?
