I have a new XP laptop and I would like to to plug in my
17" flat screen in and use the split screen function in XP.

Is this possible with just one video card? If it is where
do I go to set sich a function up.

Thanks

This depends on the specifics of your laptop. Some provide the ability to
use both he built in and external monitors in a multi monitor setup with an
extended desktop while other only support using it as a copy display of what
is on the laptop LCD.
See you laptop manual and vendors web site for supported monitor setups.

Alternatively just plug it in an see what happens when you switch between
various modes (int to ext and both) and also have a look at the Display
applet in Control Panel.
