I have 2 PC's on home network and want to share a common file area. One is
WINXP and other is WIN2000. Is there a way to use the advanced security
(ie, not XP simple) to allow only certain users access? I can share the
directories ok, but I'm not sure how I can grant access to the users on the
2nd machine. Typically a domain login would handle this, but since they are
just on a workgroup, how can I designate the username from the 2nd machine?

I don't want to share to "everyone", but rather a list of a few names.

you need to create the username on the another computer. For example computer a username is A. you need to create A on the computer B. Add A to the security and remove everyone.

Will this also work the same with a 9x/ME computer being networked with XP
and/or 2000?

Thanks!
