Windows XP & 98 Networking Problems

We have a Sony Laptop (centrino) model with WinXP Pro.
It "sees" the network & pings all the pc's without any
problems but not the server. The wireless system is
working 100%

Strange? Also we now have a problem with the WinXP HE
machine seeing the WinME network server

It can see and go into any of the other pc's (ZA Pro is
installed but the network has been set up as a trusted
zone) but not the server

The PC sees the network no-problem & ALL other pc's on it
apart from the Server machine which has been designated IP
address ***.***.0.0

We can access any other pc on the network without any
problems but the server machine does not come up as a
recognised network pc! It works fine on all the other pc's
though (running win98 or winME)

The other machines are then 1-15.

Can anyone help as we need to sort out this weird problem
asap. It is only the 2 WIN XP (either HE or Pro) machines
that are affected by this problem.

Any ideas as it has got us all baffled over here???

HELP!

I don't have any suggestions for you - sorry. If it's any
consolation, until I introduced the Win XP HE machine, my
network was functioning perfectly. It's a combination of
Win XP Pro (server) and 2 satellite Win98 machines. Now,
however, my new XP HE machine will not reconnect mapped
network drives at startup. Win98 machines are still okay.

I noticed that there are 5 posts in the past 12-16 hours
(as far back as I was willing to look) on this very topic
Does MS peruse these groups to attempt to address
recurring problems? I refuse to pay them $35 for their
help in solving a problem they've created.

Because my software is OEM, I'm at the mercy of DELL who
was kind enough to point me to a link on how to map a
network drive <sigh>.

Two things come to mind...
1) is the firewall option activated? if so it may be
blocking.
2) Have the other computers selected file sharing?

Good luck.
