Hi,

I've purchased a Windows XP / Windows 2000 Dual COA that has both versions
of Windows on with "One Time Choice Only" on it. As the COA has been
legally transferred to me, does this mean I can again choose which version
of Windows to install, regardless of the previous owners choice?

Thanks,

Ben

Yes, as long as the previous owner removed his Windows
operating system from his computer that used the COA.
If he did not, you have no right to use the COA.

Thanks for that.

One other thing, been browsing eBay for Windows XP COAs, and they seem to
state you can install it on two of your machines at once. AIUI, it was only
licensable for one machine per COA, or is there something I'm missing?

Ben

You must have a new COA for each installation of a
Windows operating system installed on a different
computer. eBay is not an authoritative source for
Microsoft licensing requirements.

I thought that was the case thanks. I just wondered, as for example the old
Student version enabled it to be installed on a laptop + desktop, thanks
for clearing that up!

You're thinking of MS Office. No version of Windows post Win 3.1 has
been licensed for two machines, student version or not.

As long as you also have the original computer and installation
CDs with which the CoA was shipped from the factory, yes.

That's not quite correct. Those "dual-CoA" licenses are OEM, and
available only on very specific computer models. They cannot legally
be sold or otherwise transferred without the original computer as part
of the deal.

I know of no version of Windows which you can install on *two* machines,
and no more - Volume License ones are different but start at a license
for five machines. There is a widespread and wrong belief that you can
install on a desktop *and* on a laptop: that is a concession that
applies (within limits) to MS Office, but never to Windows

I would be very suspicious of any sale of just CoA on eBay.

I too have a similar situation with an XP/2000 COA. I, on the other hand, purchased the machine along with the COA. Is it legal for me to choose which OS to install regardless of the previous owner's choice? Is there anywhere I can find official MS documentation on this matter? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi There

I just read the abouve regarding COA's. I got the same issue! However, when I enter the COA product key number into a fresh install, Windows highlights that it isn't a valid number??? Does this mean the previous owner has used the COA product key?? Regards I
