Sounds like some sort of hardware went bad.
Try booting into the recovery console and running chkdsk. Boot off the CD and choose "R" then "C"
Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console (314058)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q314058
Once in the Recovery Console, the command is: chkdsk /r
If chkdsk gives any error like: "volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" or "Unrecoverable errors" THEN the
hard drive is bad.
Replace the hard drive.
or
Format the hard drive.
It might be possible to connect the damaged hard drive to system as a Slave Drive or Secondary Drive in another computer and recover
your data.
