When I turned my desktop on, I received a message that windows did not start
successfully. I tried the safe modes, last known good configuration, and
start windows normally options, but they don't work. I don't want to run the
restore CDs w/out backing up C: first. How do I do that?

One option is to slave the drive in another XP or Win2k computer and
copy the data.
