Operating system (specifically) and service pack level?

Safe Mode work?
Last known good work?

What changed between it working and it not working?
Installed any new software?
Uninstalled any software?
Installed any new hardware?
Any electrical storms?
Any symptoms occur before this?

I have laptop, given to me by a friend, which won't boot Windows XP Pro
(unknown Service Pack). I get to the screen with:

Boot to Safe mode
Boot to Safe mode with Networking
Boot to Safe mode with Command Prompt

Boot with Last known good configuration

Boot Windows Normally

Whichever is selected, the boot process fails with a brief flash of a blue
screen, then returns to the Toshiba splash screen and tries to boot again.

I used the [Esc] key to get into the BIOS configuration mode, where I found
an option to disable 'Retry on failure', and selected it. Then the boot
attempt stopped on a blue screen error. The key line was, 'Stop Error:
0x000000ED', which translates as, "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME".

If you can do that much, you can get the "Stop Error: 0x00000hhh", where the
last three 'h' characters represent a hexadecimal code number. Then Google
on the error, and find the translation.

i can get it into setup.. but i cant find a disable retry on failure... and
when it fails its like it shutsdown... the monitor goes into powersave mode
and then tries again!!! any clue where to find the disable??

You might be able to get your computer to boot by using the following
procedure:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

If you don't have an XP CD you can download Recovery Console here:
http://tips.vlaurie.com/2006/05/recovery-console-for-those-without-an-xp-disk/

After making this repair, see if Windows will boot. If it does, do a System
Restore to a time before the boot failure.

If this doesn't work, boot with a Knoppix disk and copy your data off to an
external hard drive. Get Knoppix here:
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

If the Knoppix disk won't run, you have a hardware failure that you'll need
to fix before Windows will ever boot.
