I tried to install a linux distro on my computer. It wouldn't install
and now my windows won't come back up. I can do a system restore but
I'm afraid I'll loose years of data that I've collected. Any help?

Afraid you'll loose years of data - does that mean you don't have a full and
complete backup? Why would you be messing with OS installs without a
backup? First thing is to backup the data.

1. Install the drive as a slave drive in another XP or Win2k computer and
copy the data.
2. On another working system create a bootable Bart PE disk, boot with it
and copy the data to USB drive
3. Create a bootable Knoppix CD, boot from it, and copy the data or if
there are two CD drives, one a burner, use the k3b program on the Knoppix CD
to burn to CD.

When you do a syestem restore, it creates a restore point. if you are missing
your saves data after restore you can undo the restore or use file and
transfer to cd then restore and then reload your data i hope it don't reguire
1000 cd's GL

Can you say what message you get when you boot. The system restore may not
fix the problem and I don't think that you can loose data by doing it. Maybe
you overwrote the master boot record in order to make the system boot linux.
If so, see the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/.../proddocs/en-us/bootcons_fixmbr.mspx?mfr=true

Maybe also you will have to run the recovery console from the setup cd. I
assume that you run windows xp. There is an equivalent procedure for other
windows versions.

Is English your primary language? It's mine, and I haven't a clue
what you're talking about.
