I just got a New DVD burner for xmas and want to know how to use WMM and a
DVD burner.
Prior to getting the DVD burner I was using WMM to make slide shows, saving
to an AVI file and then using TMPGnc Plus to convert the AVI file to Mpeg2
and then was using Nero to burn to a VCD. Now I want to burn to a DVD and
Nero no longer accepts the AVI or the Mpeg2 format.

I really like WMM since I am familiar with it and for my use it is more than
adequate. I have also found that converting AVI files to Mpeg2 with Tmpgnc
Plus gave me great results when burned to a VCD format. I am hoping that the
quality will be even better when burned to DVD, assuming I can find a way to
do it.

I have a sony Drx 500ul burner.

Thanks for you help

Jim

You'll need to save from MM as DV-AVI and use something else to burn DVDs.
Something probably came bundled with your burner, but if not - reply to the
group and ask what people are using. Everyone has their own favorites.
PapaJohn's website has a list too I think.

For DVD production there are four phases in the process:
1. Video Editing - getting your source video into a "polished" state
(typically DV-AVI)
2. mpg2 conversion - take the DV-AVI and convert into DVD compliant mpg2
video & audio streams
3. DVD authoring - Designing how to present and playback those mpg2
files on a DVD. What menus do you want to display, chapter points, sub
menus,... and so on. The output of the authoring process is a set of
files in a VIDEO_TS folder that can be burned on a DVD.
4. DVD burning - Takes the authored DVD file set and transfers to DVD
media.

WMM & TMPGenc are still the ticket for editing video and mpg conversion
for steps 1 & 2.

There are a number of tools that could be used for step 3 DVD authoring.
Personally I like DVD-Lab from http://www.mediachance.com/ or check out
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/tools?section=2#2 for a wider list of tools.
Nero 5.5 and beyond works fine for DVD burning in step 4.

Also, check what software was bundled with your DVD burner. It will
cover those functions to some degree. How well is a question that
depends on the specific software. Be forewarned, usually the bundled
software is fairly weak in terms of functionality or reliability.
