Hi,

We have been having this incident on some isolated cases but now is it
turning into something big.

Some of our customers complained to us that after installing SP2 for winxp
windows will not start.
It hangs shortly after the part where you can press F8 for startup options,
at that small progress bar before entering graphic windows mode.

We took this as a slight bug and formated the HDD and reinstalled the OS
from scratch, proceded to install SP2 and The exact same thing happend.

Some of our customers have OEM copys, others have retail copys so im
assuming its not related to licensing issues.

More recently, it has happened at a cybercafe we maintain. We stopped the
Windows Update procedure after 5 machines got taken by the problem.

System restores won't fix this. Only solution thus far we have discovered is
to format the HDD and NOT install SP2.

This is very upsetting and we would appreciate fast feedback.

I've had this on two of my clients machines as well, however, a format and
reinstall of everything (including SP2) fixed it. My guess was that it had
something to do with the new firewall but I wasn't sure.
Does it happen the very first time you reach the desktop or after you've
loaded some programs/drivers?
It can also be the machines that you did the upgrade on weren't healthy
machines (my have been infected with spyware/viruses).

I have only tested it with a fresh install after the drivers were installed.
However, the problem has ocurred in several diferent machines (hardware and
software installed).

My problem is that on a cybercafe with over 40 pcs, even if a full format
and SP2 install before drivers works, this will be time consuming to say the
least. I was hoping for an easier way to solve this.
Btw, when I say after drivers installed I mean VGA and network drivers.
Could so little cause Windows never to restart again and not allow you to do
a system restore? (also tried to restore the system by hand and didnt work
either)
