Windows will not shut down

Whenever I want to shutdown or restart my computer, I go
to the start menu and select shutdown. The dialog box
comes up asking me if I want to Shutdown, restart, or
logoff. When I choose shutdown or restart and hit "OK",
the computer just remains in Windows and totally
disregards the command. I then have to manually shutdown
the computer by pressing the power button. I hear it is
not healthy to shut the computer down like this very
often. I was hoping someone could give me some assistance
with this problem. Thank you.

If you are running a lot of programs in the background it
can take some time for the system to shutdown.
This has been my problem and all it takes is some
patience.
It takes me sometimes almost a 1.5 minute time for mine.
Another way is to exit any programs that are running in
your taskbar before going to shutdown.
It works for me!
