I've been recently having to log on to windows at start up by click the admin
icon which I never had to do before and have all the guide lines for
automatic log on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282866/EN-US/ . I am the
only account on my computer and have no password. I have tryed the display
properties
w/ screen saver and advanced. I would like to know what else could be
causing this?

Hi.

..NET Framework 1.1 could be the cause of the problem. It creates a hidden account so Windows shows the Welcome screen even if there is only one local user without password. Take a look at this KB article:

The Welcome to Windows screen appears when you start Windows XP after you install the .NET Framework 1.1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827072/en-us

To automatically log on use Tweak UI from Microsoft. Download the tool from this page: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx. Install it, open Start, All Programs, Powertoys for Windows XP, Tweak UI. Select Logon, click Autologon, check 'Log on automatically at system startup' and enter the username you want in the 'User name' field. Click OK to close Tweak UI.

the answer completely overlooks the statement that this user has no password.
I'm in the same boat. Any ideas?

Contrary to what others have been saying, you do not need to download
anything. Just log on to you computer. Click Start > Run > and in the box,
enter 'control userpasswords2' (without the quotes) and press OK (or the
enter key). Select the account you want to log on automatically. Then uncheck
the box next to "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer."
Press OK and reboot. You should automatically be brought to your desktop.

NOTE: If you are using XP Home, DO NOT USE "CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2" TO MAKE
ANY OTHER USER ACCOUNT CHANGES. If you do, you might totally mess up your
user accounts!!!!!!!

Hope this helps,
