Hi:

I have a small home networking environment, with several XP Pro systems
trough DSL routers with cables and wireless connections and all joined a
home-based domain.

Sharing files is not a problem within the domain environment either through
LAN cables or wireless connection.

My wish is to access folders/files when I am away from home, such as on
travel or at office.

So does that mean I have to set up an VPN environment to accomplish it?

If so, could anyone please point me to where can I find tips for doing this,
and/or are there any additional software/hardware that I would need in order
to accomplish it?

PS: I do have always-on cable connection, and preferably not using dial-up
if possible.

Many thanks.

Hi:

Thanks for your kind reply and I will follow the link to set up.

Will post back for results.

Thanks again.

Hi:

I have tried the configuration but got an 800 error.

After going through more information of the dialing box and the linked
article, I suspected that it could be the cause of port setting as listed
follow:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you use a personal firewall or a broadband router, or if there are
routers or firewalls between the VPN client and the VPN server, the
following ports and protocol must be enabled for PPTP on all firewalls and
routers that are between the VPN client and the VPN server:

Client ports Server port Protocol
1024-65535/TCP 1723/TCP PPTP

Additionally, you must enable IP PROTOCOL 47 (GRE).
---------------------------------------------------------------

I do use personal firewall (Symantec NIS 2004 Pro) and broadband router.
And I guess that I have to enable the port for NIS 2004 Pro. So my
questions are:

(1) Open the port: I can see HTTP port list on the NIS 2004 firewall setup,
is this where I add those ports? Currently, there are 80, 81, and...

(2) 1024-65535: What does this mean? Adding port from 1024 to 65535 or...??

(3) Protocol PPTP and IP Protocol 47 (GRE): How do I add or enable them?

Thanks so much.
