XP Professional?
Out IT manager is afraid it could not work properly.
I wish you will help me wih having a quick feedback

Yes.

Hi,

I don't know if it can work ok with your server, but my 2 cents is that
you'd be better understand what users are talking about if you're using the
same system as they are.

Now this is my rant:

Despite I don't have major problems on my testing system, the user interface
is the most counterproductive that I have ever seen and they should declare
insanity.

There is no clear benefits for re-training user for the new work styles
(except changes for the purpose of changes), and despite I haven't reached
the final conclusion, it seems Vista will always cost me a few more clicks
for accomplishing the same things under XP. A few more clicks - that's
productivity!

Vista can live alongside XP, but to connect to work, you may need the
ability to connect to a domain, for which you will need to be running Vista
Business or Ultimate..

Do what your IT Manager says, it's his network, not yours. If he has time
to test Vista Business on the company network and gets things stable in
his mind then he'll let you know. Until that time use XP.

I've been saying that forever.
All the changes, including widespread renaming of "default" folders and
apps, rearranging of menus with no rhyme or reason, and apparently for no
real purpose, confusing new graphic interface, are all necessary to make
Vista look sufficiently different from previous versions of Windows. This
only serves one purpose; to create the illusion that Vista is a new OS. Dig
deep enough and you can find dialogs and graphics leftover from Windows
3.11.

Consider, no one will ever offer an explanation as to WHY all these
system-wide changes were implemented, much less needed. This is just another
example of the Marketing Dept. at work.

Hi,

But I have a different opinion about that - this is an example, from what I
know although may not apply to MS, when engineers thought they know
"everything" and when they jump in marketing.

Thank you for your reply.
Other users are my colleagues in the company. Some of them are connected
directly to my subserverserver (same local server), and others are connected
to other subservers and the rest of them (most) are connected to the main
server at company head office. We communicate with each other using MS
Outlook, we share information using common area network, we communicate
sometimes using Skype.
Sorry I'm not specialized in computers & IT.
I wish the above is enough for you to give me precise enswer.
Thanks,
Yousef

Hi Richard,
I'm not specialized in IT & computers.
I was obliged to buy a notebook (Intel Core 2 Duo, 15.4" display, built-in
cam, 1GB RAM, 160 GB HDD, OS Windows VISTA). You never find in the market
notebook with the above spec. with OS Windows XP. You can find if it but
without camera, or you ca find with camera & XP but with Intel Core Duo (not
double).
Since I am mostly connected to company subserver (main server is in another
country) and I communicate with my colleagues in different sites & countries
via MS Outlook, I want to know if the new laptop (OS VISTA) will work
properly while it is connected to the server (Outlook, Internet, Download
from server, etc....).
Please help.
Yousef

Impossible to say definitively without knowing the details of your
network configuration, but, if you have a properly configured, standard
Windows Server 2003 domain, Vista should interface with it flawlessly.

Out IT manager is afraid it could not work properly.

Then he either has an older Network Operating System, or doesn't know
how to properly configure a modern NOS.

Again, you have not provided enough information (and absolutely nothing
of the technical nature) to make any kind of accurate assessment. Your
Network Administrator needs to make this determination.

I was looking on here to find an answer to the same question you have.

Hi,

Sorry for I can't give any definite answers but based on the following
(correct me if I am wrong):

(1) You are not specialized in IT (that means, you may not solve problems or
have a clue of what it is, once it comes out),

(2) It is your work computer (meaning, you will need it for the job),

(3) You will connect to and interact with different networks (meaning,
uncertainty arises)

If the above are correct, I'd suggest to use XP, and the following is not
particularly tailored to Vista but for all new OSes - you don't know what
could be the problems and the worst case scenario (I always think about it,
even it might not be the case) is that your work will be interrupted for
unknown period.

If you can manage to get another HDD or system, you can play and test the
new system (without activating it since you have 30 days) until you solve
all the problems and/or decide if you really want to use it.

For myself, I never put a new OS on my work system (but home system is
another story) until I feel it is safe to do so and our help desk can answer
some questions as well.

Try to get both if you could, but if you can't, I will take the safe side -
XP, but that's just me.

Which version of Vista ? If it is Home and your company uses domain servers
you will have problems.
