purchased a hp530 desktop with vista basic pre-installed.
was never able to backup the operating system using hp backup and disc
supplied by dealer are incorrect.machine has crashed and i now want to
reinstall all the software.
is it possible to dowload a copy of vista basic and use my original licence
to activate the os

If your disk is the right Vista disk but the snag is just for the product
key you can call MS. They have a especial service that unlocks installations
in the process if your key does not match.

You will have to start teh install and call them when the product key needs
to be entered.

Do you mean that when you attempted to use the HP provided backup utility,
it failed to burn the disks? Or do you mean that you just never got around
to trying it in the first place? If the restore disks provided by HP are
wrong, call HP and have them send the right ones.

Have you checked your documentation for a way to use the hidden restore
partition that is on your hard drive? Usually started by hitting one of the
F keys at startup.

the disks failed to burn and the discs i got from the retailer are for win xp
cant i download vista basic from the microsoft site ?

i have the product key not the vista disk i could not backup the oem software
with th hp backup facility and the discs the retailer supplied me are for win
xp

I am still a bit confused. However, you can still go this route, call that
number which is easy to find after you dialed: 800-MICROSOFT.

Also, how about confronting the dealer?

As a member of MSDN I can download any Vista product but their product keys
must be different from the one you possess. What I I am driving at is that
if perhaps you could get to that site which may not be possible you could
have an image or an exec on your HDD. People who download from there do not
usually call MS.

I am at a loss.

No. You need to contact HP and order the HP
recovery discs designed for your HP computer.
