Every day I see new updates on XP updates page!
What is going on?
When is this going to stop?
I end up spending more time installing updates on my computer and less time
using my computer to do useful work!
I remember Microsoft advertised XP as an operating system which enhances
your productivity!
I dont see that happening lately!

Any comments from experts about the future of XP?? It appears that it is
really vulnerable although very pretty.. But Who cares about the
appearance?? I want security and I dont want to worry about it.

Hi Rev

Your question is? BTW SP2 is, apparently coming out in Q3 of 2004. Now if you know when Q1 started you will then be able to work out when Q3 is - think 'fiscal'.

I just reinstalled XP for a person last night. I also applied SP1a from a
download that I have. But upon visiting the Windows Update site I found that
there were still 49MB of additional Critical patches to apply. I can
appreciate your frustration but if you want security and you want to go on
line, then ensure that you are keeping up to date with the security patches,
antivirus definitions and use a firewall/router. Those who don't run the
risk of problems like those caused by Blaster.

Personally I think that many people have an unrealistic view of what
computers, and operating systems, can do. Computers are not perfect systems
and will never be. The more we ask of computers the more possibilities arise
for problems. The greater computing freedom people want - i.e. internet
access, networking, e-mailing attachments, etc. - the more opportunity there
is for exploitation. And there are many unscrupulous people with computer
skills who are willing to find and exploit vulnerabilities. As the demands
to create bigger and faster systems at a cheaper and cheaper cost continue
we will also find that we lose efficiency. It is just the way it is. So
while it is a PITA to have to keep patching systems it is what we have to do
if we choose to use computers in the ways we have become accustomed to.

On the other hand if your computing needs do not require a lot of eye candy,
and you aren't into gaming and you can get by with few choices in
applications to choose from then you might want to try another OS and see if
that better meets your needs. I hear UNIX is very secure but there is a real
problem finding decent games to play on it ;-)

All you say I agree with.
What disturbs me is the problems some updates are causing XP users.
I,too just got a cpr with XP and SP1 installed, but need another 100 MB
of updates, mostly security patches.
Can I presume that no current update I get is going to cause me
operating problems?
