I'm trying to update my Windows XP Home Edition, but the choices on the left are unavailable to choose and at the right of the screen it says Administrator Only and that I must be logged on as an administrator. I did log on as the administrator but it still won't let me get to the updates. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi

Microsoft Windows Update Troubleshooter
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

See e.g. "When trying to use the Windows Update Web site you receive an "Administrators Only" error message (Windows XP only)" in the link above

I tried doing the Microsoft Windows Update Troubleshooter and went through all the resolutions, but it still comes up as Administrator Only....are there any other suggestions that you have? Thank you for letting me know about the other site, I really appreciate it.

Hi

I suggest you post to the microsoft.public.windowsupdate news group, stating what OS you have (WinXP) and your problem and what you have tried to solve it...

URL to the web interface for the windowsupdate news group:

I downloaded the Windows Update Disabled (network policy) and when I tried to open the file another screen came up saying "The procedure entry point RtlIsThreadWithinLoaderCallout could not be located in the dynamic link library ntdll.dll." I was wondering if you know why this came up or what I can do to fix this? Thank you so much for taking the time to help me with this.

Theresa,

Click Start, Run and enter REGSVR32 VBSCRIPT.DLL Then run the VB Script
you downloaded again.

Thanks for your help but this did not work either. I think it might have something to do with the Administrator account because I went to look at the user accounts in both safe mode and regular mode and a message came up saying that I had the wrong number of arguments or invalid property assignment. I really appreciate all the help you are providing me with, do you think you might have an idea of why this is coming up?

If you go to a command prompt and type:

net localgroup administrators

Is the user that you are logged in with in that group?

Hi

Have you done a system restore or something lately? I would say you have some sort of DLL mismatch.

I would have considered a repair install of the OS:

Theresa,

Open a Command Prompt window and enter SFC /SCANNOW Have your XP CD
handy.
