with a cable modem, whenever I get a Windows update (the
current one is only 2.8MB), it takes forever to download.
The 2.8 has been downloading since last night. Is there
any way to speed this up? Is there any way to change the
settings (maybe windows thinks I have a dialup modem?
Thanks in advance.

That file size should take no longer than 1 minute absolute max on cable
modem. How do you connect to the cable - ethernet direct, wireless,
router? What is your ISP?

Go to http://www.broadbandreports.com , find the speed test section and
follow the instructions there. The speed testing is not definitive, but
will certainly show if there is a major problem. Use drtcp.exe to
change your settings as instructed.

From a command prompt type: ipconfig[space]/all[space]>c:\iplog.txt,
open the file c:\iplog.txt, copy all, and paste into a response to this
thread. BTW, [space] is one space between letters in the command.
ipconfig provides all of your connection information and is the first
step to diagnosing a problem

The only thing I see for Comcast is the host name. Comcast does not
require a hostname and I don't see it on mine. I would look at your
ethernet cable, it should be a straight through common ethernet cable.
If you have another, try that to eliminate cabling problems. Also, shut
down your computer, power down the modem for about a minute, then
restart the modem and when it has booted restart the computer. This
often solves spurious problems.

Since you connect directly to the cable modem, you should have both a
firewall and updated anti-virus operating. Get a copy of either or both
of Spybot and Ad-Aware (Google) and run both to eliminate malware as the
problem source. Do a complete virus scan. If the problem continues,
try posting to http://www.dslreports.com in the Comcast forum for
additional help.
