I have just re-installed windows xp and now find that
windows update does not function. I can access the web
site, it scans my pc, provides a list of updates to
install, starts to download then stops and tells me the
installation was unsuccessful. Any ideas?

Hello!
At the command prompt (Start/Run/CMD), type the following
commands, pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Then try the install again.

Hank,

I have spent the entire weekend chasing this problem with
my own re-installation. After MANY calls, I am told by
Microsoft Tech Support that the update site is down.
There is no notification on this at the web site. Has
anyone else gotten this same story? Please let me know..

Hank,
You have to dig out the "install failure" Error --- the specific code # &
text.
The update log file would indicate if & why
each failed ---should have error code + some text .
You need to find & "isolate" the section of the log for that "fail date".
Use Windows' Notepad to open this log:
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log (for Win XP & Win98/Me)

Having found the "error" , then do a "search" on this MS page. See MS
Windows Update Troubleshooter
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

It "may" be there are connection problems due to geography or if your ISP
DNS servers are out of phase.
However, I have not had problems reaching Windows Update on the past 4
days ---- including today August 18.

Note that some users on Cox net have had connectivity problems. If you are
one of those, or if you think your ISP has/uses proxy servers....
then.....add *.akamai.net to Trusted Sites or add it to the proxy exception
list.

Open Internet Explorer browser> main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.
Click "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" to
*clear* the selection.

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to list
of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com (and then click Add )

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (click Add)

https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (yes with HTTPS)

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

http://download.windowsupdate.com

*.akamai.net (yes, akamai.net -- since August
15-16, 2003 )

Click OK.

Apply changes to I.E. & exit out of it. Retry Windows Update from the main
Windows Start menus.
