Can anyone help?
my automatic updates no longer seem to run.
Have tried running manually, but i get message" connecting" and then the
system just sits there.
Any help appreciated as not a dab hand at this!!!!
Thanks
John

I have written a program called "Dial-a-fix" which automates many of the
fixes the great Microsoft MVPs provide in these newsgroups. Note, however,
that Microsoft nor the MVPs endorse, nor support, my third party program. As
with any major configuration change, back up any important data and make a
system restore point before proceeding.

1) Download Dial-a-fix: http://DjLizard.net/software/Dial-a-fix.exe
2) Checkmark box #3, "Fix Windows Update"
3) Click GO.
4) Report any errors you get to me.
5) Restart the computer.
6) Visit Windows Update again.

And are you crediting the people whose fixes you copied? Is the program
free? Ad-supported? You may be a very good guy but I'd be quite
hesitant to download and install a program from an unknown source.

Is the computer completely virus/malware-free? Be sure:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

If the computer is clean, see information at this link:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906602&SD=tech - How to troubleshoot
Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services
installation issues

You may also wish to post to the Windows Update newsgroup where there
will be experts on WU to help you: microsoft.public.windowsupdate

If the instructions at any of the above links seem too complicated (and
there is no shame in admitting this), take your computer to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA).

Thanks for the Information,
Did as you requested but still only get message " Connecting " when I try
and run Windows Update
I run xp pro sp2
windows live onecare
windows defender ( beta)
everything was fine untill about 4 days back.

JJF1312:

I use XP Pro SP2 with all updates. Had your same Defender problem for almost
1.5 month. On April 1, I purchased OneCare and that gave me access to a less
than 24 hours MS Support Engineer problem reply, all because Defender is part
of it. The solution given, was the complete removal of the old corrupted
Defender and its subsequent reinstallation.

The incorrect removal of Defender and reinstallation may cause a malfunction
in
the weekly Signature version updating. One fix for this problem is applying
the
KB article 915105 Resolution, on a weekly basis, before doing the Windows
Update. Another
fix is the complete Windows Defender program removal and reinstallation. The
latter will
not require to run the Resolution, for the Signature to update automatically
using Windows Update.
Follow all the steps carefully, it worked for me and can do the same for you.

Step 1:
============
Before removing a program it must be stop and exited.
Stop and close Defender as follows: Click the Tool tab / General Settings /
scroll down to Real time protection options and uncheck Turn on real-time
protection (recommended) / click Save and exit. If you are also using
Windows Live Onecare,
go to View and Change Settings and on the Antivirus tab select Off,
click Ok and exit. Then follow the next two Steps sent to me by Vanessa Hu, a
Microsoft Support Engineer.

Step 2:
============
1. Click Start, click Run, type "msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" (without quotation marks) in the Open
box, and then click OK.
2. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from this
following link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
3. Run the utility from Start -> All Programs -> Windows Install Clean Up.
4. Select all Windows Defender related entries from the list (if there are)
and click Remove.

Step 3:
============
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Download and install Windows Defender from the following link and reboot
the computer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en
3. Please go to Microsoft Update:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ and install the updates for
Windows Defender.

Done all the above the Defender will updated and work to perfection.

Thanks Efrain,
but after following your notes to the letter, I still cannot do a windows
Update.
Have now uninstalled Defender but try as I might Windows Update will not run.
I now also have a shutdown problem, the only way I can restart my PC is to
power it off then on.

JJF1312:
Because we close and exited the programs no harm has been done to other
software. Reinstalling them will bring all to normal. If Windows Updates
takes too long, maybe is because you have dial-up service or slow ADSL. I
have ADSL 2048/512, and have to wait 25 seconds to start WU. Try just
restarting your PC a few times and let me know. Just restart.

Thanks again
but the problem still exsists.
Have ADSL 2meg and it has been running for over 23mins now with no change in
the message " Connecting"

JJF1312; Please download and install all Windows Updates. It's a must to
update Windows BEFORE installing Defender, because it needs .NET ..etc.
I don't understand what you mean by "auto update". Are you refering to
Windows XP or Defender?

can connect to micrsoft download site no problem, its just auto
update that will not connect

1.) Dump (uninstall) all Beta software.
2.) Learn through Common Sense Computing how to dump the added code in
updating your Windows install:
