Lyle Pfeifer

I have successfully downloaded XP sp2 on 2 computers, an
Athlon and a Petium Centrino. My home Petium 4 hates
me. I have tried to remove previous service packs, one
at a time to get it to download with no help. I went so
far as to re-install windows XP home with service pack 1,
and ended up with the same message, "Updates were unable
to be successfully installed." I can't even get it to
update my fresh windows install, as there are no known
items in the add/remove programs as before. Thanks for
any help in advance, Lyle.

I'm sorry to say, but I think you're screwed! From what I have read sp2 will
only cause you trouble. I was going to install it but knowing what I know
now I would just leave things alone. good luck.

George, you are completely paranoric . Many, many of us have ordered the CD
for SP2, received them, installed the update and have no problems whatsoever.

Why did you try to delete previous service packs? You apparently caused your
own problems. If you reinstalled XP home with SP1, what updates were unable to
be installed? What do you mean 'known items in add/remove programs'?

I deleted 2 update packs, not service packs, my mistake.
I deleted them on info from this site in trying to fix
the sp2 update problem. Deleting those 2 didn't help, so
I kept deleting. XP was still working fine after all
this, it just took it back to where it is now without any
of the update since sp1, but it will not update. It
looks like the update program has changed from what it
used to be. I was thinking if I went back to the start,
I might be able to update from the begining of the
install. The info on the 2 update that were recomended
to be deleted led me to believe I may have a corrupted
download in one or both of them. Lyle

Lyle;

It's Pentium, not Petium.
And the Centrino is not a chip. Centrino is a combination of motherboard,
processor and wireless connection. Centrino is referred to as a
"technology".

I have 5 computers at home, varying vintages and configurations. I have 23
machines at work that I am responsible for maintaining. I do keep them
maintained very well. I installed Sp 2 on all of them, and I have no
problems whatsoever. The other networks in the building I work in all have
SP2 installed. All totaled, there must be well over 300 computers. Not a
single issue on any of them.

Do not listen to know-nothings like George. He reads something negative,
assumes it to be true, and then does not even try to install it himself.
Then he goes spewing garbage like he spewed here without any knowledge of
what he is talking about.

Your fastest and perhaps best approach to this is to reinstall XP then, order
the CD from MS and install it. Leave all the other garbage off your system.
After reinstalling XP do not go on the 'net until you are sure the firewall is
on or until you install SP2.

Dude, thanks for the info. That really helped me with my
problem. I will let you know when I need your kind of
help since you can talk the talk, how about walking the
walk. What the problem with my computer? Lyle
