I have been trying to download the latest update from
microsoft, and i get so far and then i get a pop up (kind
of ironic considering..) saying that it is missing a file
and to begin the installation again.

I have done this numerous times, have done virus, adware,
spyware.. etc etc checks on my pc, but its still not
working.

Please help, there is only so long i will perservere
until i lose my nut and start battering my poor pc.

Would really appreciate any help you could give me.
..

What update is that?

Where are you downloading from?

If it is Windows Update, is it the old v4 place or the new Windows
Update v5 ?

What file is missing (full path)?

Do you have SP2 installed?

it happened when i tried to download SP2, i was
downloading from the windows update site, and it didn't
give a path of the file it was missing, it just said it
was missing files that it required and to reinstall the
update again.

Hi

I suggest you install SP2 without using WU:

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center
(standalone "network" version, 266 MB):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a

If you think that the download is to large, you can get the same
file on a CD from Microsoft.

The Windows XP SP2 CD order point:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Also, you should clean out this folder (WU5's temporary download
folder) to get rid of the SP2 temporary installation files from
your previous installation attemp:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

And, before installing SP2, you should take a look at the
following sites:
