Do not panic; this is likely fixable. I would highly doubt it would "wipe" your OE message files.
Do a thorough SEARCH on your system, for "*.dbx" files ---the message stores for Outlook Express.
Files like "inbox.dbx" , "outbox.dbx" , "folders.dbx" . The XP stores O E messages at a fearsome location like
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR-LOGIN-NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\...\Microsoft\Outlook Express
On WindowsXP, OE user files, including *.wab and *.dbx files, are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders. In Windows Explorer main menu---- choose Tools----Folder Options----"VIEW" TAB. Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose Show hidden files and folders. Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Review remaining options. click apply & ok. do clean exit.
For your O.E. in XP: To determine the location of your store, click Tools| Options| Maintenance| Store folder.
