Windows update

Hi when I'm at the update it says I need to install the critical service pack 1 update so I start to install it but then boom my computer freezes. Everytime I've tried to install the update it does this and it doesnt just freeze in the same spot neither one time I was almost done when it froze and it screwed up my boot up cause it wouldnt take me to the login section I ended up having to run my xp home edition cd and repair it to be able to login again.Is there another update that replaces this one that will work for me or wut can I do.I notice at this one game site I cantplay the games there without java something so how do I get the java update part?thank you M.G.
