windows update will not function

I had to remove some bad files with my antivirus and now my windows update
will not work.

What have you done to try and fix it?
What (specifically) did you remove to get into this state?
What error messages (what prompted you to notice) are you getting?
Anything in your event log?

See if your antivirus has a restore function that will put back the
"bad" files it removed, next, find a different antivirus, one that
won't damage your system.
 
Check your systems date and time. Also, try to reregister the dll files
in Internet Explorer by using the following directions:

The regsvr32 command-line tool registers *.dll files as command
components in the registry. If you don't know, a dynamic link library
(*.dll) is a collection of smaller programs, which can be called upon
when needed by an executable program, such as explorer.exe. The *.exe
extension specifies an executable program, so if the *.dll files are
corrupted; they will most likely not work properly and cause you
problems. You can quickly re-register them with this command quickly and
safely. First - you need to ensure that you need to repair Internet
Explorer. You will know if, you have major problems with opening it
(closes on its own), or you may have spyware that has corrupted it so
badly that nothing can save it anymore.

Second - we need to make a batch file and get it on the server. This is
easily done with a USB, CD-ROM or floppy drive. The batch file is made
by opening up a word or text document and creating the actual script as
seen here:

Once you complete the file, it simply needs to be saved with a new
extension, as you can see here - *.bat. (for batch file). You can name
it whatever you want, as long as you remember to type at either a
command prompt in safe mode, or if you can get the system to load
without the shell and by doing a <ctrl> <alt> <del> you can get Task
Manager, go to the Applications tab => New Task . button => and run the
batch file in the Create a new task dialog box which is basically a
renamed run dialog box if it looks familiar to you.

Shenan the automatic update is gone. When I click on it in control panel
nothing. And under my computer the tab is missing. It has just disappeared.

David I had to disable system restore to delete the files. I may need a new
anti virus but I need to get this fixed. Auto update is gone the tab is
missing under my computer and nothing happens when I try to access it in
control panel.

control panel. IE works fine.I have tried installing files used by windows

Disregard my previous post. Have you tried to run system file checker?
Click START, click RUN, type sfc /scannow. Have your Windows XP CD
available.

I meant to open up your antivirus program and see if it has a built in
method of restoring the files it's removed, some do have that
capability and it may not have deleted any files but moved them to a
"quarantine" area. If so, the help files in the AV should give you
restore instructions.
 
Thanks David I will look into that. Over the years I have not had that much
trouble with virui. I am not up on what the programs will do. I will see if
I can make any sense of my files.

I sure hope it works for you. You didn't mention what AV you're
running but I use AVG and it stores any infected files it finds in a
"virus vault". The virus vault, when opened, has a menu that allow me
to restore any file that are in there to their original location. If
your AV has something similar your problems might be easy to fix!
