Windows Update stuck in a loop

Windows Update is jammed on auto-update, settings screen is greyed out, and
is downloading the same 4 updates at 4am every morning. I click to install
them and they go away 'til the next morning, when they re-appear. This has
been going on for over a week. No error messages.

Any ideas how to unjam this function would be appreciated.

Try checking details for kb#, then check add remove programs dialogue. If
they are shown uninstall them.
Then manually run winupdate and install a single update.

Thanks. Did the check, #'s aren't there. Possibly Microsoft Update scanner
has flagged and tried to send updates which aren't suitable e.g. for
different/newer versions of Explorer and Media Player and now sends them
every day, but they can't install. The 3 Explorer updates are for v6.1, but
6.0x is resident on the PC.

Seems to have stumped our IT department as well. They are also locked out of
the Windows Update settings screen. They tried setting updates to manual in
Windows Manager, but it had no effect on auto-update.

I suggest you post this in microsoft.public.windowsupdate for help.
