Help...please,

I'm running XP Home addition with SP2. I have symantec antivirus and
internet security. I have a problem with the Windows update. The update
page hangs up and does not load all the way. The status bar at the bottom of
the Window fills up, but the page never loads. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks

Disable NIS and retry Windows Update.
Otherwise reconfigure NIS so that Windows Update is not blocked.

Assuming the OP has NIS 2005/6 thats not as easy as it looks. I have
just spent several days battling with NIS 2006. It can block
applications of all types weather it is disabled or not. You can go
into the "configure personal firewall" section and set it to "permit
all" and it still blocks.

I had to to switch off the automatic configuration, clear the
application list, re-set the PC and try again then select "permit all"
every time a pop-up appeared and had to do this twice to get round a
similar problem.

Eventually it started working sort of but I did not try Windows
Updates I forgot about that, my problems were with FTP Clients and Bit
Torrent amongst several other problem apps. The most irritating thing
was disabling the firewall alone has no effect. Disabling both the
firewall and AV did restore connectivity for some but not all of my
test apps but that kind of defeats the object innit? I did get it
sorted eventually but it took a lot of tweaking and fiddling with
rules in NAV & NIS which was a long way from novice stuff.

The best advice would give is bin it and put something else in,
anything but Norton. I only installed it briefly on a test machine to
have a look at it and I was even less impressed than I was with 2005.
I will no doubt see a lot of it in the next few months, Symantec
fixing is my biggest earner and I generally fix it with the Uninstall
/ Re-install something else routine which never fails (oh sorry it
does the uninstaller sometimes doesn't).

And same as last years NIS 2005 it took out a machine again, my fault
this time though......................bugger!......... The annual
reinstall XP after testing NIS routine again. Next year I am going to
try it on the crappiest PC I can build with old bits and throw the lot
in a skip when I have finished with it.

Actually I would probably have to get a proper job if it were not for
Symantec so I should be grateful to them.

CHEERS SYMANTEC !
