Over the past few months my weekly visit to the windows update page has
become increasingly slower and slower. This is happening on my office pcs
as well as home. Is Microsoft trying to tell us something???

Hello,

Why not use Automatic Updates?
Start > Control Panel > Automatic Updates > Automatic > OK

To answer your question directly, it is possible that there are many files
that the update checker needs to check every time you visit the site. The
list of updates for XP is growing hence it becomes slower and slower.

Also try visiting the page with add-ons disabled and see if it improves
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
Add-ons)

Thanks. I like to keep tabs on all the updates to our systems which is why I
do it manually. I only want to install critical ones as some of the others
have caused problems in the past.

I tried running IE with add-ons turned off and it is basically the same -
very slow.

Stop and think how busy that server is.

Then try: Have it send you the updates but let you install them. Then
you can let them download without bothering you and use Custom for the
install; you'll get the KB number for each one to look up if wish, the
ability to accept/deny the specific KB, and after that an option of not
have the update offered to you again.
No need for messing with manual downloads & a lot more efficient.

Hello,

You can set Automatic Updates to *ask* you before it downloads or installs
anything. Set it to 'Notify me but don't automatically download or install
them'.

Then when the update notification arrives and you need more information
other than the summary required, go to www.google.com and enter:
site:support.microsoft.com XXXXXX

where XXXXXX is the KB number (e.g. 315265) and hit the 'I'm Feeling Lucky'
button.
