Reading below about a problem with disks not being supplied with pcs,
prompts me to ask about updating Office vis a vis the general XP updates.

We were supplied with the XP discs with our Dell pc, but not the Office
discs. As luck would have it the XP discs are not called for at Windows
Update, but Office discs are called for when we try to update that?

I haven't tried this for a while, but when I did, I recall there being an
option to download some work around files, but this not working either
because it still called for things we did not have to be inserted...

Are we running risks by not being able to update Office?
How can we update it without the discs?

I believe that you are not at any high risks when you're unable to update
office but it is highly recommended that you update it once a while just to
make sure that your Office is current with patches/fixes etc.

Have you tried dowloading the updates? It should prompt you an error whether
or not an office cd is needed for your updates. Give it a shot and let us
know what you find out...Also post office version and error messages. Thanks.

GLuck!

Office updates are not a big deal.

I thought there was another respondent to this thread somewhere but can't
see it so hope this is the right place.

Have tried some more routes to updating:

Somebody pointed out to me the little 'options' link provided on the Office
Update site that allows one to opt for larger versions of the update files
to overcome the problem of being asked for discs one does not have.

Coincidentally Outlook began crashing and giving the excuse that Office
needed updating...

Initially when I tried this - 2 days ago - there seemed to be some problem
getting through to the site and the screen kept freezing at various stages.

Last night I tried it from the new Microsoft Update site that advertises its
ability to update everything from one system scan. This did indeed detect
the need for updating Project, Visio and Office.

Allowing the updating process to proceed from the MSUpdate site succeeded in
the case of Project, but both Visio and Office got almost to the end and
then asked for discs.

I could not find on the MSUpdate any equivalent of the 'options' link
provided on the Office Update site, so I went back there and found the
option for the larger files and waited 40 minutes (!) while it downloaded at
snail's pace.

I was not entirely surprised when the subsequent installation process
proceeded tantalisingly almost to the end and then asked to insert the disc
with PRO.MSI on it, or point it at where it could be found. This in the
case of both Visio and Office.

I now, presumably have 4 downloaded sets of update files (small and large
versions), somewhere on the pc, that cannot be used, and there is no trace
of any 'PRO.MSI' on the pc: and will still get messages that Office needs
updating!

So round here Office Updates are a pain!

Any further suggestions please.

Regards,

SteveH
