I recently downloaded the NVIDIA Display Software through
Windows Automatic Update.

I now have an NVIDIA icon in the notification window, but
when I click on it, it can take up to a minute to display
a pop-up menu.

Is this normal? Should I uninstall it? Everything
seemed to be working OK before.

Thanks

Steve

You should NEVER install driver updates from Windows update. ALWAYS use the
latest drivers posted to the website of the videocard manufacturer. The
driver updates on Windows update are for corporate machines that do not use
3rd party drivers (for ease of management), and should only be used on
machines that you can t use the manufacturers drivers on.

Thanks Bobby, knuckles duly rapped.

So how do I go about uninstalling it? It does not show
up Add/Remove propgrams, and I do not want to use system
restore because I installed a whole bunch of other stuff
recently.

Hi,

Even i have installed the nvidia drivers from Windows update through the Windows Update Driver Category. Surprisingly enough the performance of the pc improved and the menu item that appears in the Taskbar opens fast enough.

In your case i think the following cases are the reason for the slow performance.
1. You do not have a high volume of RAM.
2. You have high memory intensive applications installed.
3. You are using the default settings of XP related to the performance. You can change it to "Adjust for best performance".
4. You can configure the nvidia console not to show the utility in the taskbar and then use the nvidia manager to configure whenever you need to do so.

Try the above steps. if all fail then let me know. Mean while i will see how to remove the update.

Steve;

Go the Add and Remove programs in Control Panel, and tick the box that says
"Show Updates". That should work, otherwise, go into Device Manager and
right click on the video card and select "Roll Back Driver".

Agreed. I've had MSU-provided drivers make a machine unbootable.

..... snip .....

I have noticed that listed under CRITICAL updates - why would such a
driver be CRITICAL?

Is it really necessary?

I'm a bit reluctant to download a 12.2mb file on my very slow dial up
connection - can't get broadband where I live :-(

No, it is not necessary and, besides, NEVER get graphic drivers from the MS
site. Go to NVidia's web site.
