Windows Update necessities

Good evening all,

I've just gone through WU, and it listed 64 "High Priority" updates I
needed. I always use the "Custom" method, rather than the "Express" method
of d/l these. I ended taking 61 of the 64 offered. My question to you more
learned than I (that makes most everyone <g>), is:

1) IE7--I'm a little hesitant on this one as all the bugs don't seem to be
worked out.
2) Windows Malicious Software Tool (KB890830). I maintain an up-to-date AV,
run AdAware, Spybot S&D. Am happy to report no viruses of malware except
cookies and MRU lists. Should I be installing this also?

3) Lastly there is MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978). I have *no*
idea what this pertains to, so again--do I need it?

AS far as the Software Updates, I didn't take any. I don't know if I
want/need WMP11, or if my machine can handle it. .NET does not interest me,
so I don't think I need that either.

Oh please computer gurus help me. For each correct answer, I will be more
than willing to send each a copy of the EICAR test virus for your machine.
(Really legit, I'd *never* send a real virus.)
Wish I could offer more, but that's it.

Many TIA,

Why not? It doesn't take long to run anyway.

Cures a security issue with XML. I believe so.

Wish I could offer more, but that's it.

Some like IE7, some don't. It is more secure than IE7 but there are a whole
passel of posts about problems with it, though I don't know if it's any
worse than when SP2 came out and folks had a hard time upgrading because of
malware on the system or other problems. Bottom line is it's up to you.
You might want to look around a bit on the internet explorer newsgroup where
IE7 posts go for a flavor of it.

The Malicious software tool is a one shot deal. Either the system is clean
or not for those bugs it detects. It does not install anything or run
continuously. A new, updated one, comes out each month. There's no harm in
running it that I know of.

The MSXML is a security update. I would recommend installing it but as
TaurArian indicated it's not a bad idea to look at the security bulletin for
it (or any of the security updates) to get more info.

WMP11 - some like it, some hate it. I don't use it. I have no compelling
reason to do so.

A peripheral matter: Windows Media Player v11.
I installed WMP11 a couple of days back. On the whole, it seems to be
very good, although it required enabling certain Windows "services"
(e.g. DCOM) that I had kept disabled. (Error messages were found in the
Event Viewer).
I shall appreciate getting the opinion of experts.
