windows update KB904942 trashed Win Update

As I always do set a Restore Point prior to any update, I was able to
recover after installing the following Update.
Upgrade for Windows XP KB904942

After performing this update, the Windows Update page did not work.
I would not get the normal screen asking for Express or Custom and could not
figure out how to do any future Updates.

What did I do wrong? And do I need this Update?

No, you don't need it. It's an optional update.
