I have used auto updates for windows for the past 1-1/2
years. Since the middle of April I have downloaded this
update 11 times. It keeps coming back saying new updates
ready to download and it is always the same update.
After downloading and installing, I never get a reboot
requirement like most of the other updates. The only
update I never downloaded was SP1 because of the size and
only on dial-up connection.
What needs to be done??

MY guess is it may not download because you do not have SP1 installed, (that
particular update may require SP1 in order to be germane) On the other
hand, why worry about these updates if you don't have possibly the most
important one on your PC to begin with? i understand, on a dialup modem, it
would take forever..

Many folks are having this problem with this particular update. Look and see
if it shows up in your add/remove programs applet. If so, just ignore the
prompt to reinstall it until someone comes up with a workaround or fix.

Do you have access to a computer with a broadband
connection - at work, a friend's or relative's house -
that you could use to download Windows XP Sp1a? If so,
go here and search (near the middle of the page) for
(first line) Windows XP and (second line) Sp1a. From the
results select the appropriate Bit for your machine
(ususally 32-Bit) and best to select Windows Service Pack
1a Network Install (32-Bit) for IT Professionals.
Complete the download and burn it to a CD that you can
then take to your computer and make the installation.
Good luck!

Dear Al W;
I wanted to suggest, have you checked the "View
Installation History" feature in the left column of the
Microsoft Updates page to see if KB835732 (Protection
from SASSER WORM) appears in your list of installed
updates? Maybe it is already there. I had the same
experience of items appearing in a list to be installed,
that already were. (Why do they do this??)

Also, thought you'd like to know, I was able to order a
Service Pack 1 CD from Microsoft for 9.99 (free ship.)
Call (425)635-3311. It takes 3-10 days to arrive,
installed in about 20 min. with no problems. Hope this
helps.

I had this exact same problem with this update and it was
due to insufficient space on my system drive. Go to
\Windows and look for KB835732.log. It will tell you what
happened when you tried to apply the update.

Once I knew, I make room on the drive and the update ran
one final time.

Howard
