I'm trying to update my Windows XP pro. When I click on
the Windows Update Link- it says "Access denied- Network
Policy settings prevent you from using Windows update to
download and install updates on your computer."
What can I do to cure this ailment??
Thanks in advance

You neglected to point out if your PC is a member of a domain - as it sounds
like you are. In which case your network administrator does your updates
for you (at least from the message you are getting.)

If it is a stand-alone machine - please state so.

I'm pretty inept with computers, please bare with me. I'm
connected to a wireless router at home. I don't think
that my laptop is part of a domain..could you explain a
bit more? Thanks

Sounds like you are not in a domain..
Try this:

1. Open regedit, or whatever you use to edit your registry.
2. Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\I
UControl
3. Modify the SelfUpdateStatus key (be sure to choose base:decimal) from 0
to 1

If that does not work, try this:

1. Start -> Run: gpedit.msc
2. Expand User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and
Taskbar.
3. Double-click "Disable and Remove Links to Windows Update".
4. Select Disabled and click OK.
5. Close GPE.

The second is more likely to work for you...
