windows update freezes

i download the windows xp updates, they download fine, creating the file wutemp - then the process just stops - the download doesn't install - if it is any difference, i just upgraded from xp home to xp professional

i didn't seem to find any help - when i looked in the
wutemp folder (after deleting and loading in only one (1)
update file (XP SP1) i found the download file - i opened
it, clicked on the self extract exe and it ran just fine -

so i went back to windows xp update - and indeed it
recognized that XP SP1 was installed - so wipe the wutemp
file again - and try another file - and NOPE - when the
process gets to the 'install' part the thing just freezes

so what now batman?
