Why does Windows update offer me 3 drivers, (AMD, Nvidia and Intel Modem
drivers), that are approx. a year older than the ones I already have
installed ? On top of that, there's no info. or link to info. to explain
what I would be collectin ...version no. etc. !!!

I'm afraid that I can't bring myself to even touch them with a barge-pole
because last year, (on a previous XP platform on my older PC inards), I
accepted them, and got a machine that wouldn't even boot.

Since then I've been advising people to avoid driver updates from MS
....should I continue to do so ?

regards, Richard

....and why did 837009, 831167, 837001, 828741 and 835732 claimed by Windows
Update to be 3.1mb's in total, come in at several times that size !
....i.e. were these updates similar to ones that download a small, typically,
2 - 300kb "handler" that then charges off and downloads HUNDREDS of
megabytes from MS !! ??

regards, Richard

Maybe they've just been thru WHQL (digital signature)or something, but you hav
to say of the millions of computers update takes care of,a posting of youre topi
ia rare...Update really specializes in windows os,as far as youre hardware goes
one should update from the mfg site on thier own, even microsoft recomends that..

I'd say yes, continue to do so, because if i ever
download the driver "updates" it always ends up in me re-
installing my origonal Nvidia drivers.
As to your 2nd post the reson behind that is because
microsoft dosent get its priorities right, instead of
testing things before they are released it "seems" they
just release buggy software to the public and hope it
isnt noticed by sensless idiots who think its a brilliant
idea to write a virus that restarts your PC after about 1
minute or deletes your master boot record every april 1st
as a so called "joke".. yeah.. realy funny, that was guys.

Andy.

i have the same experiance with windows drivers. most of
the time the drivers they recommend are out of date or are
generic.
don't use them! go to the web site for your hardware and
get the drivers there.

The drivers on Windows Update are nothing more than replacements for the
ones on the Windows CD, so if you know you are using a driver that came on
the CD, you can and probably should update that, but since the average user
isn't computer savvy enough to know where the drivers they have on their
computer came from, it's probably better to come down on the side of just
telling people to avoid WinUpdate drivers, because they might just be
downgrading their current drivers or worse, and advise them to seek driver
updates from their computer OEM and/or the device manufacturer.

Smart advice. I never choose a driver update on windows update, they are
usually plain vanilla drivers that are not as current or complete as you
would get from the mfg website.

I would avoid taking drivers from Windows Update for that very reason.
It happens because those are the latest drivers to go through the MS
Quality labs and be certified. Update appears to believe that such a
certified driver is bound to be better than any uncertified one, even if
that is later. But in Video drivers, especially, the makers are
constantly improving drivers, and the ones they have on their sites, and
recommend, may have fixes to problems in that certified one - things
that did not show up in the certification process. Either leave well
alone, or go to the maker's site for their best offering.
