Does anybody know why Microsoft stopped producing update CD's that contain
all the patches. It would really help people who are on dial-up to install
Windows patches due to some of the patches that are huge. If anybody have
some feedback on this it would be appreciated.

What did Microsoft say when you called them?

I didn't call them. I read this in an article that Microsoft was not going
to distribute anymore CD's. I just think that it would make it easier on
people who have dial-up connections to keep their computers up-to-date. The
two CD's that they did come out with were very useful for installing updates
on other people's computers that I worked on.

Let me be the first to tellya that anyone without a broadband
connection will suffer more and more in the future.

Get a broadband connection, or learn to live with it bucko.

In the UK, broadband is unavailable in some areas - so how would you suggest
they update without CDs??

There is always someone writing something about what Microsoft i
planning or not planning to do. I think it is at the point tha
Microsoft just doesn't know who is doing what anymore themselves. :

Actually, I think that the idea behind the roll out of updates a
they were known will/has come to pass. Purely guess work...but
think that with new partnership agreements with major OE
manufacturers to strengthen sales and marketability that soon to b
future updating will becoming through the OEM themselves and no
through Microsoft. I.E. you buy a Dell...well you go to Dell for al
your updates. The same with all other OEM distributors

This will protect the business partnership agreements for the s
called "Branded" OEM builders who have been extremel
unhappy with the actions of small BIY'ers that have caused a majo
crunch in their market shares. It is as proprietorial as it come
but more or less guarantees a return customer base, adds a new sale
pitch and (what really counts) removes Microsoft from the Public Ey
as to....."You must contact your system builder for warantie
and updates" ...which also henders the smaller guy because i
will be hard to sell a computer that you can't get updates for on
regular basis

While I again say this is just a lot of guess work on my part...th
writings on the walls and the trends are already in place for this t
be achieved

But for the most part...I feel positive that it will happen and wil
more than likely start here in the "Good Ole USofA" an
filter out to the other countrie

Locate a place where they have broadband and a download all the updates you
need. Then burn them yourself to a CD or DVD.

Unfortunately not everyone lives in an area where broadband is
available. They have to rely on what is available. My former ISP
couold care less. They dropped their analog modems and installed
digital modems without telling their customers. My speed dropped from
33.3 to 24.6. It was excruating to download even a 1mb file. And they
didn't provide broadband in my area. Fortunately for me a new company
startrd providing broadband. So don't blane anyone for not having
broadband, some arears just don't have it, or the cost is prohibitive.
