Just installed xp home sp2 and did a WindowsUpdate and there are 34 of them.
Just wondering is there a way where I will be able to download these 34 items
somewhere (say desktop) and install them later. The whole idea is if I
reformat my hdd the next time, I do not want to go to internet (to get these
34 items) as I am on a restricted usage plan. Looking for some guidance and
thanks in advance

Go to the corporate area if you want to download them.

Rather than give you just a little information - I will tell you how to get
the updates, how to integrate them into your own CD, etc.. That way you are
better informed about your options when it comes to the Windows Updates.

Direct Download of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP

What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

You can download all updates and burn them to CD..

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

patches..)

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-may.mspx

July 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-jul.mspx

Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.

Many thanks for your help. I actually wrote down the 34 kb of updates, but
when I look up for the individual kb, say 873339, there are 12 results/items
( some of them are not for xp). But how do I know which of the remaining
items is the one that I should download?

Or is it too late to know now the exact one (1/12) and that I should
download ?
I should have downloaded and saved it (as oppose to downloading and
installing directly when I first do thw WU).

I click on the link http://www.neowin.net/images/icons/softicon.gif but
nothing appears. Will try again later.

From this link, http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=409564
random checks I suppose these were the 34 updates that were installed in my
pc. So I can download these 34 updates.

My xp home sp2 disc, is the sp2 inside my cd the same as Microsoft SP2 cd
(the cd given by them free)?

Onve again, thanks for your time

Back on this suject, when I seek clarification/help from MS Helpdesk, they
say after I installed the os using my XPSP2 cd, then do the WindowsUpdate,
(there are 34 patches) I cannot burn these 34 pactches as its only the "pc"
knows which particular program/patch (for that particular kb #) to download
(even though we know the kb number).
So, I am now confused about Windows Update Catalog. I am still trying to
achieve my objective, that is to burn the 34 patches after I install the
Window XP SP2 (that is the cd I used to install window already have SP2
inside). Care to comments.

If the catalog confuses you, use the alternative method. Go month-by-month
and visit the web page that tells you all of the patches released that month
and grab all of the ones from that month. You thne end up with a complete
list of patches to install into your SP2-ified Windows XP fresh install
later.

After SP2 is installed, there are over 60 post-SP2 patches available.
You can either download them by KB number.. Which I will provide as
complete a list as I can in just a moment - OR you can download then in th
month-by-month method I gave you earlier in this thread and will repeat now:

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-may.mspx

July 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-jul.mspx

*Hint: Scroll down each of the month's pages, find the "Affected Software
and Download Locations" expansion, expand, use the table to match up your
product and right-click on each link for each download and open in a new
window (or tab if using a tabbed browser like Firefox) and use the new page
that opens to download the actual patch.

There's 61 of them. Not saying that is *all* - but you'll have few left to
download after a clean install and installing all of those from a CD or
network/etc.

I suppose the '61' you are referring are the 'critical' downloads only. Then
by right after I installed the xpsp2, I should get '61' instead of '34'. In
fact, I re-installed the other day and only need to update '34' patches.Just
wondering why the difference.I am sure all the '34' kb's that I wrote down
are in your list. Anywher many thanks
