Thanks Maurice, I am sure I haven't disabled anything, well not
intentionally. I have only had laptop since 9th Jan and up to now its not
always been a pleasure!! I do have Zone Alarm installed and AVG Avti Virus
which is updated as often as they produce the updates, I check daily. I have
looked at the article you suggested on 814995 and as with a lot of these
articles I am afraid 'they go above my head'. I'll probably leave that one
then!!
I have checked Dougs article and mys Shell Hardware Detection is started and
automatic.
I have been on the Fuji website and I am trying to sort out whether I ought
to get an updated driver. Been looking on my system but couldn't see where
my drivers were to check which one I have to see if there is an updated one.
I just can't get my head around why it is intermittent. I could understand
it always not working but to work sometimes when I start laptop and not
others doesn't make sense to me.

In your opinion then do you think I would be 'safe from any problems'
if I just downloaded the Critical Updates and left the ohter updates
alone. I am taking the advice given about not downloading any
Drivers it suggests. I remember with my Desktop I once downloaded an
update it suggested for DirectX ( which couldn't be un-installed) I
said never again!! Lynn

Hello Lynn,
A) On your Autoplay problem: Do you remember if you ever disabled some
"services" in Win XP? Specifically "Shell Hardware Detection" service ! It
should be enabled and set for "Automatic" startup. Also, check Properties
of your CD-drive to re-check your Autoplay.
DO see Doug Knox's website

[And Doug: I hope you don't mind my rephrasing of your advice

]
B) On your Windows Update general question: Yes, do take Critical &
security updates - regularly. This is my general advice.
While there were 1 or 2 occasions of updates causing some pain, by far and
away most of these updates have worked.
(The 2 that did not were easily un-done.)
Another reason to take security/critical updates is to protect your system
(or rather to reduce the risk) from malicious virii/worms/hackers. There is
currently at least one big nasty out there.
However, beyond all this, you must have your system use a good firewall
(even if you only use the built-in one from XP) , in addition to using a
good & updated antivirus program.
C) Invoke Windows Update on a regular basis, at least once a week.
D) You had an early question on fix 814995: That item is totally optional.
I have yet to install it, because my system does not need it.
If this fix shows as "recommended" ---- it really should say optional !
Get it only after reading the KB article, and convincing yourself that you
need it.
See

P.S. "Recommended" fixes are NOT critical.
