ive just reinstalled xp home onto a sony vaio, but it still isnt working
properly.

in windows task manager 'System' (second to bottom) is constantly at 80-90
meaning any task i try with the laptop takes for ever. i have nis05 installed
and updated, plus spysweeper which is also fully updated. these were both
installed before going on the net, i then reinstalled the broadband modem and
then updated them.

ive been to msconfig and set the processes and startup items to an absolute
minimum. am i missing something?

thanks for any help

Well, a lot of the time people think that they have virus's or spyware
causing all the problems with their PC, and a lot of the time they're right.
In your case and in many others there are no viruses or spyware which means
that it is more than likely hardware.

It may be that you have too much software for your hardware to support, so,
Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and enter task manager. Click on the performance tab and
see how much page file is being used and how much physical Memory is
Available.

You may have a piece of hardware failing. To test click start > run > type
"cmd" (without quotes) and click ok > type "chkdsk /f c:" (without quotes and
spaces between chkdsk and /f and c:) > let it run a check disk upon reboot
and reboot your machine. That tests the Hard Drive. Now to test your memory
go here and download the test and put it on a cd or floppy and boot from it
and let it test your memory.

Windows Memory Diagnostic

If all these tests come back negative you may need to take your machine into
a qualified repair shop to perform the proper tests on the rest of your
system. Good Luck.
