Hi:
I had the exact same problem as yours, back before July
4th. In my case, one software program/upgrading-failure
literally took a whole system with it.
Sad to say, ... but the only solution for this, ...
was 're-installation' by using Recovery CDs acquired
through the manufaturer, hp. Then, I highly suggest you
to contact the manufacturer of your computer and ask them
to send it ASAP. For me, it took just a few days' wait,
from hp to my home, in East Coast. Plus, it's 'Free!'

Unless you have a good knowledge/skills with some tools
on computer, ... probably it may be hard to recover XP as
before. For me, I could not waste any time, then I was
happy to get it back by 're-installation,' although I
lost some invaluable files due to this, ... another
story, 'I didn't back-up everything for this unexpected
Crash.'
