I receive a Windows system error (1517) after every reboot, when Windows is
loading (Win XP Pro sp2).
The system I am using does not actally belong on the wireless network I am
using the internet from and indeed, has a different Workgroup, etc., for when
its connected to its own wireless network.
Can I assume that the system error is just the o/s recognising that the
computer does not belong on the network and presumably that the Workgroups do
not match?
Thank you for any help.

Workgroups have nothing to do with the problem. A network can have
any number of workgroups, and a computer in any workgroup can access a
computer in any workgroup. In fact, I don't think that the problem
has anything to do with networking.

I recommend posting a new message in the Windows XP general news
group, with a complete description of the problem: complete text of
all error messages, when the error occurs, what else is on the screen
at that time, etc. The more details you give, the more likely it is
that someone can help.

Is this a computer that has been SYSPREP-ped?

If so, as the article says, the error is normal the first time and may be
ignored.

If not, go with Steve's suggestion to get into the XP General newsgroup as
your problem does not appear to be strictly a network problem.
