Windows starts with a blank black screen

I get to start windows okay with the loading screen and
everything, but when the "welcome" screen should appear,
the monitor goes all black. I can still hear the startup
music however, and because i have "media" key on my
keyboard, i am able to listen to music i have saved. I
have two operating system's on my computer, and the
second one works [kind of, more problem's there...] so i
know the problem isn't in my monitor.

ANY help would be grately appreciated!!

You have other options. At boot up depress and hold F8.
choose the option :

Last Known Good Configuration

or this is a new option if you have sp2

I can't rememeber exactly, " Disable system error restart"

Or you start in safe mode. If you boot up I would run
Error checking Need help Open help and support and search
for "error checking" You should also run virus and
spyware scans Need help?

If you don't have virus protection, Symantec test your
computer's exposer to online threats.

If you don't have reliable spyware removal, you can get
it with spybot free at :

I suggest you run the spybot scan. It will run awhile.
WHen finished ,clean recommended. Some entries will be in
memory. The program ask if you would like to fix at next
boot up. Reply yes

It has an automatic backup so you can restore fixes.

You'll also need to remove startup registry items also.

They can help you with interpreting logs. Just follow
their instructions. You can wait for their interpretation
or you can look for 04 startup entries. I suggest you
delete any software startup thats not store bought
software.

ok, i've done all that, and i've started in Last known
Configuration, but when i start it up again, it doesn't
work. I've done the error checking, and done the virus
scan, and the spybot scan. however from safe mode, i
cannot access the internet to download Hijackthis? ...
I've also gone through system restore, but it doesn't
seem to be working for me.
